Stained Glass Symbolism

O Lord God, the whole world is filled with the radiance of your glory: Accept our offering of these windows for the adornment of this place and the inspiration of your people. Grant that as the light shines through their in many colors, so our lives may show forth the beauty of your manifold gifts of grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Hand--God the Father
east window
Hand Window

A hand extended from the clouds is the oldest visual depiction of God the Father, the first person of the Holy Trinity.

The Father's hand is extended in creation and in blessing.  It is able to guide, and it reaches out to save.  "The hand of our God is gracious to all who seek him (Ezra 8:22)."  The green background color symbolizes creation and life.

In art, depictions of persons of the Trinity are usually surrounded by a special form of circular nimbus (halo) that has three rays emanating out from the center.  In Good Shepherd's three windows depicting the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the entire window serves as the nimbus, each with three rays.

Lamb--God the Son
south window
Lamb Window

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ, theSon of God and second person of the Trinity, is often referred to as a Lamb.  John the Baptist proclaimed, "Here is theLamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29)!"

In Revelation, John the Divine speaks of Jesus as a Lamb who was slain, and yet is still alive (Rev. 5:6)

The Lamb carries a flag of triumph, with the red cross of his death surrounded by a white field of resurrection.  The purple background color is symbolic of both Christ's suffering as well as his royalty.

"To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever (Rev. 5:13)."

Dove--God the Holy Spirit
west window
Dove Window

The Dove is a Biblical symbol of the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit.  In all four Gospels at the moment of Jesus' baptism, the Holy Spirit is described as descending upon him "like a dove (Matt. 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22, and  John 1:32)."

The Dove is symbolic of swiftness, dynamic motion, gentleness, and purity, which are attributes of the Spirit.

The background color is the powerful red of fire, another scriptural image of the Holy Spirit.

"Like the murmur of the Dove's song,
like the challenge of her flight,
like the vigor of the wind's rush,
like the new flame's eager might:
come Holy Spirit, come."  (Hymn 513, The Hymnal 1982)

Holy Eucharist
north window
Chalice Window

In scripture, the color blue is symbolic of Heaven.

For Christians, Heaven touches Earth through Holy Communion.  Jesus Christ is spiritually and really present in the consecrated bread and wine which are his Body and Blood.

This window is also the only one of the set with four rays, which form a cross.  The cross is a reminder that Communion is a remembrance of Christ's death and resurrection.

"For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes (1 Corinthians 11:26)."

Special thanks to Diana Hubin and the members of the Art Committee for designing these windows.
